A 3-month wet removal project

The asbestos removal within Cardiff City Centre progressed successfully during the 3-month project we completed for one of our valued clients.

Asbestos removal is one of our specialist services, and this project demonstrated our expertise in the safe and controlled removal of asbestos-containing materials, using expert methods and machinery. Throughout the removal process, we strictly adhered to regulations and industry standards to minimise fibre release and ensure the safety of workers and occupants.

Our process of removing asbestos-containing materials

This was a licensed (notifiable) removal that required several 14-day notifications to be made to the HSE.

It involved many different enclosure setups, and we carried out the multi-point injection removal method within one of the enclosures during the project week.

Within these enclosures, we removed several different types of asbestos; we removed sprayed insulation from support beams above suspended ceilings, where a large amount of sprayed insulation residue was present, as well as asbestos pipe insulation.

In the final weeks, we removed large amounts of pipe insulation throughout the site within many different enclosures, along with asbestos insulation boards in areas such as skylights and ceilings.

We not only carried out licensed asbestos removal within this site, but also removed non-licensed materials such as vinyl floor tiles, gaskets, textiles, and corrugated cement.

It was essential that we removed all asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) from the site to eliminate any potential exposure to asbestos fibres, which pose serious health risks when inhaled. Complete removal ensures the safety of workers, occupants, and future users of the building by preventing the spread of hazardous fibres to other parts of the property.

A project like this required large amounts of planning and organisation from our project managers, Health and Safety Manager, site supervisors, and, of course, was overseen by the operations director to ensure everything ran smoothly throughout the whole process.

To allow us to carry out work as discussed above, we had to have an asbestos license and all the correct insurance and accreditations. This, along with over 20 years of experience in the industry, gave our clients the confidence to trust that we would deliver exactly what we proposed.

What is wet strip asbestos removal, and why is it important?

Wet strip removal is a technique that involves the controlled wetting of asbestos-containing materials, using water and wetting agents, to minimise the release of airborne asbestos fibres during the removal process. This method significantly reduces health risks by suppressing fibre release, ensuring the safe removal and compliance with industry standards and regulations.

What equipment is used in the wetting process for asbestos removal?

Specialised equipment, such as wet strip injection machines, is used to inject wetting solutions directly into asbestos materials. These machines conform to British Standard BS 8520, which specifies performance standards for controlled wetting equipment. At City Environmental Services, we ensure that every machine, tool and technique we use is safe, compliant, and the best method for containing risks.

How does compliance with legal requirements impact asbestos removal projects?

Compliance with legal practices, including the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and adherence to British Standards, is vital to protect workers, residents, and the public from asbestos exposure. Our project in Cardiff City Centre is the perfect example of a busy area, where the general public needs to be factored in.

Following these regulations ensures that the removal process is conducted safely, with proper containment, use of personal protective equipment like respirators, and appropriate disposal of asbestos waste.

What are the benefits of using wet strip injection machines compared to dry stripping?

Wet strip injection machines provide a safer and more efficient technique by minimising airborne fibre release through controlled wetting. Unlike dry stripping, which can disrupt asbestos materials and increase fibre release, wet stripping reduces the risk of contamination and health hazards, making it the preferred method in the asbestos removal industry.

What safety measures and tools are essential during wet asbestos removal?

Essential safety measures include the use of PPE such as Type 5/6 coveralls and FFP3 respirators, establishing sealed containment zones, and rigorous cleaning and decontamination of tools and workers to prevent fibre spread. Only non-powered hand tools should be used to avoid disturbing asbestos fibres, and removed asbestos materials must be securely bagged for safe disposal.

Exposure to asbestos fibres can be a serious risk to your health, so identifying potential asbestos containing materials in your house is really important.

Our blog will guide you on how to identify asbestos in your home, the importance of professional asbestos surveys, and the safety precautions and asbestos regulations you need to follow to protect yourself and your family.

When are you likely to be exposed to asbestos?

Finding out whether you are exposed to asbestos is based on when your house was built and the materials used.

The first step is to determine if your home was built before the year 2000. This is important because asbestos use in building materials was widespread from the 1950s through the 1980s in the UK, before being banned in 1999 due to the serious health risks associated with asbestos exposure.

Many common building materials from that era (such as asbestos cement products, textured decorative coatings, vinyl floor tiles, pipe lagging, and asbestos insulation) may contain asbestos fibres. These asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can pose significant exposure risks if they are damaged or disturbed.

If you suspect asbestos may be present in your home, it is highly recommended to have a professional asbestos survey carried out by trained professionals. An asbestos survey will help identify asbestos materials safely and determine their condition, reducing the risk of fibre release and potential health issues like lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

carried out by a competent surveyor.

The surveyor will carry out an intrusive inspection of your home, sampling any suspect materials for asbestos. This is to ensure that any refurbishment works can be carried out safely without putting the contractors, you, or anyone nearby at risk.

The surveyor will then send the samples to the lab, and the results will be written up into a detailed report, making it clear if and where any asbestos materials have been identified.

It is important to note that any materials containing asbestos should not be disturbed and should be left in situ. This is because asbestos becomes harmful to humans once airborne, so leaving it alone is the safest thing to do. If the asbestos is exposed, it will need to be encapsulated or removed by a professional licensed contractor. Remember, do not attempt to collect asbestos samples yourself without proper training and personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE), as improper handling can increase exposure risks.

           Strict asbestos regulations for homeowners

Due to its highly dangerous nature, there are a lot of safety precautions and asbestos regulations that homeowners, employers and business owners must follow when removing asbestos-containing materials. Firstly, the removal of higher-risk asbestos-containing materials should only be carried out by a licensed contractor. As it is very dangerous, carrying out the removal yourself could cause more harm than good.

As for legal regulations, the duty to manage asbestos is a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Identifying asbestos present in your home requires caution. If you suspect potential asbestos in materials like asbestos cement water tanks, textured coatings, or vinyl floor tiles, do not disturb them. The safest approach is to hire an asbestos expert to carry out an asbestos survey and collect asbestos samples for testing. Avoid DIY testing or handling asbestos yourself to prevent exposure risks. If you are concerned about any asbestos-containing materials in your home, please

What should I do if I find asbestos-containing materials in my home?

If you discover asbestos materials in good condition, it is generally best to leave them undisturbed. However, if the materials are damaged or likely to be disturbed during renovations, you should contact a licensed asbestos professional. Handling asbestos waste requires appropriate packaging to prevent fibre release, and it must be disposed of legally through licensed disposal sites or your local authority.

Are asbestos testing kits reliable for home DIY asbestos sampling?

While asbestos testing kits may include personal protective equipment and instructions, collecting asbestos samples without appropriate training can increase exposure risks. It is recommended to rely on trained professionals who follow proper handling of asbestos procedures and send samples to an accredited laboratory using methods such as transmission electron microscopy for accurate results.

What are the health risks associated with asbestos exposure?

Exposure to asbestos fibres can lead to serious health issues, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and pleural thickening, such as diffuse pleural thickening. No amount of exposure is considered safe, and symptoms may take decades to appear. People with pre-existing respiratory conditions have an increased risk, so preventing possible exposure is essential for protecting human health.

What legal responsibilities do homeowners and businesses have regarding asbestos?

Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, owners of commercial premises and residential properties have a duty to manage asbestos appropriately. This includes conducting risk assessments before any work, providing appropriate training to workers handling asbestos, and ensuring asbestos waste is disposed of correctly. Violations can lead to penalties enforced by environmental protection agencies and local authorities.

Understanding the difference between Licensed (Notifiable) and Non-Licensed (Non-Notifiable) asbestos removal can often be confusing, especially for those outside the asbestos industry. This confusion can lead to stress and difficulties when seeking accurate quotes for asbestos removal.

The asbestos industry contains many grey areas, making it challenging to clearly define the distinctions between Licensed and Non-Licensed materials in a brief overview. However, we aim to cover the essential basics to help you gain a clearer understanding of asbestos removal processes and requirements.

           Licensed vs non-licensed asbestos

The damage, deterioration, and quantity of asbestos-containing material play a significant role in determining the appropriate removal method. Generally, if the material is non-fibrous and firmly bound (such as cement, vinyl, or bitumen) and is in reasonable condition, it is classified as non-licensed removal. These non-licensed materials typically contain chrysotile fibres and, in some cases, crocidolite.

To an untrained eye, it can be difficult to know the difference. For example, a garage ceiling can either be Asbestos Cement or Asbestos Insulation Board; these two materials can easily be mistaken for one another, even by professionals. By sampling these materials, the lab can determine the type of material and avoid asbestos being wrongly removed and disposed of.

Materials that require removal by Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractors involve stringent safety measures, including a mandatory 14-day notification to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), as per the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. The licensed asbestos removal process includes constructing enclosures around the asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), implementing fibre suppression techniques such as wetting to reduce fibre release, setting up decontamination units for operatives to shower, and using negative-pressure units to control airborne asbestos fibres.

These materials are typically more fibrous silicate mineral-based and friable than those handled under non-licensed asbestos removal, posing a significant hazard as they can release fibres with minimal disturbance. Common examples of licensable work include garage ceilings made of asbestos insulating board (AIB), soffit boards, and undercloaks.

What is the difference between low-risk and high-risk asbestos materials?

High-risk asbestos materials, such as insulating board and pipe lagging, are friable and can release fibres easily, requiring licensed removal. Low-risk materials, like asbestos cement sheets and vinyl tiles, are non-friable and less likely to release fibres, allowing for non-licensed removal with proper safety measures. A thorough risk assessment determines the appropriate removal method.

Why is knowing the difference between licensed and non-licensed asbestos removal important for your health?

Understanding the difference is crucial because licensed asbestos removal is required for high-risk asbestos-containing materials that can release harmful asbestos fibres, posing serious health risks and environmental contamination. Non-licensed removal applies to lower-risk materials, but both require proper handling based on a thorough risk assessment to ensure safety and prevent asbestos fibres from being released into the environment.

Who regulates asbestos removal work in the UK?

Asbestos removal is governed by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and overseen by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Licensed asbestos removal must be carried out by an HSE licensed contractor, while some non licensed work may require notification to the appropriate regulatory body.

What is notifiable non licensed removal?

Notifiable Non Licensed Removal (NNLW) is a category of non licensed work that involves larger-scale or higher-risk asbestos cement products or textured coatings. This work requires notification to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) before commencing and must follow strict control limits to prevent fibre release.

Why is a thorough risk assessment important before removing asbestos?

A detailed risk assessment is essential to determine the appropriate removal method (licensed or non-licensed). It considers the type, condition, and friability of asbestos-containing materials, ensuring regulatory compliance and minimising health risks by preventing uncontrolled fibre release during refurbishment work.

What are the legal consequences of not following asbestos removal regulations?

Failing to comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012) can result in fines and imprisonment. All asbestos removal work must be done by qualified professionals following strict safety measures, including air monitoring and staying within the legal control limit. A thorough risk assessment demonstrating the risk involved and notifying the appropriate regulatory body, like the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), is required for licensed and notifiable non-licensed work, or it can be classed as non-regulatory.

The different types of asbestos-related illnesses

There are several different types of Asbestos related illnesses that can be caused from exposure to Asbestos fibres, including:

            Lung cancer

Mesothelioma (which is cancer of the tissue around the lungs)

Asbestosis (where the lung tissue becomes scarred)

Pleural effusion (this is a type of pleurisy, and is the inflammation to the sheet like layers that cover the lungs)

Pleural plaques (which is the development of hard structures around the lungs and diaphragm)

Early diagnosis of an asbestos-related illness is important because it allows for timely management of symptoms, improves treatment options, and those affected seek compensation and support sooner.

Knowing about different illnesses caused by asbestos exposure and the symptoms to look out for is really important. Mesothelioma and Asbestosis are the least known illnesses, so here is some more information surrounding symptoms, diagnosis, and support.

           Mesothelioma:

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumour that is caused by exposure to asbestos fibres and forms in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Some symptoms of Mesothelioma can include shortness of breath and chest pain.

More than 2,600 people are diagnosed with Mesothelioma each year in the UK. The majority of them are men aged between 60 and 80 years old.

Unfortunately, it's rarely possible to cure Mesothelioma, although treatment can help control the symptoms, and research is continually evolving.

           Asbestosis:

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by long-term exposure to asbestos fibres. When inhaling asbestos fibres, they enter the lungs and can gradually damage the lung tissue over time by leaving scarring and inflammation. This scarring makes the lung tissue stiff and less able to expand, leading to difficulty breathing and reduced lung function.

           Some of the symptoms include:

            Shortness of Breath

            Persistent Cough

            Wheezing

            Tiredness/ Fatigue

Pain in the chest and or shoulders

Symptoms of asbestosis often take 20 to 30 years to appear after initial exposure to asbestos dust. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for asbestosis, and lung damage caused by the disease is irreversible. Instead, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications.

Who is most at risk of asbestos exposure?

The straightforward answer is that anyone can be exposed to asbestos fibre. However, certain individuals face a higher risk due to their environment or occupation.

For example, contractors who worked in older buildings constructed or refurbished between the 1960s and 1990s are at a higher risk of inhaling asbestos fibres. These buildings often contain asbestos products such as brake linings, floor tiles, and insulation materials, increasing the likelihood of exposure.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness, you are likely entitled to financial compensation, even if the exposure happened decades ago. You can pursue a civil claim or apply for government lump-sum payments and weekly benefits like the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. A specialist asbestos solicitor can help you navigate the paperwork.

What are the most common symptoms of asbestos-related diseases?

Common symptoms include a persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing, and fatigue. These signs result from lung damage caused by inhaling asbestos fibres and may indicate conditions like asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma. Early medical screening is therefore crucial for effective management and treatment.

How long does it take for asbestos-related illnesses to develop after exposure?

The latency period for asbestos-related illness often ranges from 20 to 30 years after the initial exposure to asbestos dust or fibres, however, it can be much longer. This means symptoms may not appear until many years after inhaling asbestos fibres, making early detection and monitoring crucial for those at risk.

Can I claim compensation if I have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease?

Yes. Individuals diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease can claim compensation. It is important to start the claims process within the three-year time limit from the date of diagnosis. Specialist asbestos lawyers can assist with personal injury claims to ensure you receive a fair compensation award.

Is it possible to make an asbestos claim on behalf of a loved one who has passed away due to an asbestos-related illness?

Yes. Family members can claim compensation on behalf of a loved one who died from an asbestos-related disease. This includes claims related to mesothelioma patients and other asbestos victims. Experienced asbestos lawyers and support groups can guide families through the legal process, helping them understand their rights and navigate complex personal injury claims to secure fair compensation.

What are the risk factors that increase the chance of developing asbestos-related lung cancer?

Risk factors include prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibres, smoking, and exposure to asbestos products such as brake linings and floor tiles. In particular, smoking combined with asbestos exposure significantly increases the risk of developing lung cancer. Early detection through chest x-rays and lung damage screening is essential for managing these health risks effectively and improving patient outcomes.

What other asbestos-related diseases should I be aware of, and what legal options do I have?

In addition to the well-known asbestos-related illnesses mentioned above, exposure to asbestos fibres can also lead to other serious pleuropulmonary diseases, such as diffuse pleural thickening and peritoneal mesothelioma. These conditions affect the membranes surrounding the lungs, potentially restricting lung function and causing severe respiratory distress.

           An introduction to asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre that was mined in many places across the globe, mainly in South Africa and Canada. For decades, it was the superstar of the construction world because of its incredible strength, resistance to fire, and its great insulating properties. However, we eventually learned that those same qualities make it very dangerous to human health.

Asbestos materials are most commonly made up of 3 unique minerals: Chrysotile, Amosite, and Crocidolite.

In addition to these, there are 3 other asbestos fibres: Tremolite, Actinolite, and Anthophyllite. While these additional types were never commercially sold or widely used in building materials in the UK, they remain important to know about due to their presence in some asbestos-containing products.

           1. Chrysotile Asbestos (White Asbestos)

Chrysotile, commonly referred to as white asbestos, is the most widely used form of asbestos. Known for its high flexibility and excellent heat resistance, chrysotile asbestos was extensively utilised in a variety of asbestos-containing products. These include asbestos cement products such as cement corrugated sheets, brake pads, vinyl floor tiles, and even bitumen-based materials. Its versatile properties made it a preferred choice in the construction industry and other applications requiring durable, fire-resistant materials.

Also known as Brown Asbestos, Amosite is valued for its exceptional strength and high heat resistance. These properties made it an ideal choice for use in asbestos insulation board, pipe lagging, and spray coatings. It was commonly applied in fire protection materials such as fire breaks above doors, fire doors, and boiler room ceilings. While all forms of asbestos are hazardous, Amosite poses a higher risk of

           3. Crocidolite Asbestos (Blue Asbestos)

Also known as blue asbestos, Crocidolite asbestos fibre is the least common of the three main types but can still be found in some residential and commercial properties. Blue asbestos is typically found in brittle materials such as pipe insulation, pipe lagging, and sprayed coatings, which can easily break down and release hazardous asbestos fibres. Due to its fragile nature, exposure to blue asbestos can pose a significant health risk, making it crucial to identify and manage asbestos-containing materials properly in construction projects and buildings.

Asbestos use and exposure in the UK

In the UK, asbestos use was banned in 1999 following a rise in asbestos-related illnesses. Asbestos is commonly found in buildings constructed before 2000, particularly those built or refurbished between the 1950s and 1980s.

Due to the widespread use of asbestos-containing products in construction materials such as asbestos cement, pipe insulation, ceiling tiles, and asbestos floor tiles, it is a legal requirement to conduct an asbestos survey before refurbishment. Proper asbestos testing and removal by licensed contractors helps protect workers and the public from exposure to asbestos fibres and the associated health risks.

How can I identify asbestos in my home or building?

Identifying asbestos requires professional asbestos testing, as asbestos-containing materials are often hidden within building materials such as cement products, insulating board, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, and pipe insulation. For this reason, hiring a trained expert is the only way to safely collect the necessary samples to test for asbestos fibres.

What are the most common sources of asbestos-containing exposure?

People are most commonly exposed to asbestos fibres through inhalation, especially when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed during construction projects, renovations, or natural disasters. Occupational exposure is therefore more common in industries such as construction, shipbuilding, and the manufacturing of thermal insulation products.

What are the health risks associated with asbestos exposure?

Exposure to asbestos fibres can lead to serious asbestos-related diseases and illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma (a rare cancer), and asbestosis. All forms of asbestos fibres are hazardous and classified as carcinogenic by the World Health Organisation. The risk is higher with exposure to blue and brown asbestos, which are more hazardous than white asbestos. The latency period from exposure to disease diagnosis is typically around 20 years, and people with pre-existing breathing problems may be more sensitive to asbestos exposure.

What is asbestos cement, and where is it commonly used?

Asbestos cement is a composite material made by mixing cement with asbestos fibres, providing additional strength, durability, and fire resistance. It was widely used in construction for products such as roofing sheets, wall cladding, pipes, gutters, and water tanks. Due to its cement-like appearance, asbestos cement can be hard to distinguish from ordinary cement materials.

What regulations govern asbestos removal and worker protection?

Asbestos removal must be carried out by licensed professionals who follow strict safety protocols to protect both workers and the public. Regulatory bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversee these procedures to minimise health risks. Additionally, employers are required to provide annual asbestos training to all personnel who may come into contact with asbestos. In the UK, the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 provides clear guidelines for the safe management, removal, and disposal of asbestos.
