Duffryn School, Newport Asbestos Removal and Demolition Case Study

Project overview

City Environmental Services (UK) Ltd was appointed by BAM Construction to deliver asbestos removal works at Duffryn School in Newport, South Wales. The works formed part of the pre-demolition programme, removing significant quantities of asbestos-containing materials so the existing school building could be safely demolished and the redevelopment could progress.

Scope of works

• Removal of 2,450 m² of asbestos vinyl floor tiles and associated bitumen adhesive.

• Removal of 2,290 m² of asbestos insulating board (AIB).

• Removal and safe disposal of 200 m² of asbestos thermal insulation debris.

THE CHALLENGE

A substantial volume of mixed asbestos-containing materials had to be removed in a controlled and sequenced manner before demolition could begin. The programme required careful coordination of enclosures, access, decontamination and site interfaces while maintaining progress across a 12-week delivery period.

HOW CES DELIVERED

Works were undertaken by trained asbestos removal operatives under fully controlled conditions. Enclosures, negative pressure units and strict decontamination procedures were used throughout, supported by daily independent air monitoring and regular health and safety audits.

Safety and quality controls

The project was regularly audited by independent health and safety professionals. Inspection feedback was positive in relation to planning, site management and the safety standards maintained by the CES team throughout the works.

Project outcome

The asbestos removal works were completed within the 12-week programme, enabling BAM Construction to proceed with demolition and the wider redevelopment of the school site. The project demonstrates CES’s ability to resource and deliver large-scale asbestos removal packages safely, efficiently and to programme.
